Toronto’s Largest Street Festival: Taste of The Danforth
Did you go to Taste of the Danforth this year? ToD is a huge annual festival held in Greektown, Toronto along Danforth Avenue for a period of three days in August. This year it ran from August 11-13. I would say the main excitement is definitely all of the amazing food! But, there are also fun shows and activities.
When you go, you must keep in mind the crowds! So, try going earlier in the day if that’s not your thing. This is Canada’s largest street festival. We’re talking well over a million people over the course of just 3 days! And it’s not just a celebration of Greek culture. Taste of the Danforth celebrates all of the beautiful multiculturalism in Canada. Walking down the street, there are countless restaurants and vendors selling all sorts of popular foods, including deep fried squid and churros.
Tee and I set out on Saturday afternoon, for an evening of fun. First, we walked from end to end taking it all in. We could barely walk! There were lines for various foods that stretched down the block. Finally, we settled on getting some amazing spanakopita (spinach pies) for an authentic Greek flavor. The gyro stands actually smelled amazing, but since I am a vegetarian we gave it a pass.
We had a few flavors of pies. Custard, feta cheese, spinach, oh my! For dessert, we just had to have loukoumades.
These are incredible small round pastries made of deep fried dough, which are then soaked in syrup, chocolate sauce or honey, with cinnamon. Ours were dripping in honey.
After eating quite a bit, we walked around and looked at the rides and various attractions. There was actually a tent where you can vent all your feelings by breaking some plates, Greek style! We listened to some of the live performances, before caving in and buying some more spanakopita! Because, how could we resist?
This is an annual festival that can’t be missed! If you didn’t make it to this year’s, make sure to mark your calendar for next August. I’m sure it will be even bigger and better than this year’s. Let me know in the comments what your favourite part of street festivals is! (Probably the food, am I right?)
